The Oceanic and Southeast Asian Navigation (OCSEAN) project held the third linguistic workshop on 2023 in Davao City, the Philippines in May 29 to June 2. The language documentation workshop in Davao City aimed to teach the methods of language documentation and emphasize the significance of language conservation through documentation.

The third language documentation workshop was done in Davao City with aim to understand the significance of language conservation through documentation.

The Davao City linguistics workshop was organized in collaboration with the Ateneo Internationalization for Mindanao Office, Department of Anthropology and Uppsala University, Sweden. There were 14 participants in attendance representing different indiginous ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippines - Bagobo Tagabawa, Umajamnon, Higaonon, Tagakaulo, Sama, Maguindanao, Tausog, Kagan, Butuanon, Tandaganon and Iranun.

The workshop was facilitated by George Saad, Ph.D, of Palacky University, Czech Republic. The activity went on from May 29 - June 2, 2023 for the lecture workshop in 2 days and the rest of the days were spent for their audio-video recording of the wordlist.

The workshop provided the participants a comprehensive overview on how to collect and process linguistic data on a target language: lexical data (wordlist) and textual data. They learned how to transcribe the data, and to archive and store it in an accessible and transparent manner.

The activity entitled, “Indigenous heritage conservation through documentation workshop” culminated in participants sharing their experience of documenting their own languages.

It was not an easy task to recall the languages, participants found the need to call for assistance from their parents, and elders but realized the significance of recording their vanishing language is as important as breathing.

The workshop culminated on the last day with a program where the participants wore their indigenous clothes representing their ethnolinguistic communities. In the closing program the participants got to express their experience and value the significance in the preservation of their language.

Each participant received their Certificate of Participation as a completion of their participation and cooperation to the activity. With an array of their indigenous knowledge, the workshop commenced with a camaraderie and respect to each of its own diversity.
